There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall betting is banned. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent area, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The amazing income gained from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 09:00 to 17:00, and though visas are allegedly required to cross, there are means around this, as is correct of many border crossings.

The first Cambodia gambling dens premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored bateau casino, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 gaming tables. The Naga casino is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of blackjack, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 one armed bandits and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel building that features a number of amenities on top of the gambling hall, which offers ten thousand square feet of 130 slots and 88 table games.
