There is an interesting history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino gaming is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are based in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect spot, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal capital acquired from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be largely Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and despite the fact visas are apparently necessary to pass, there are methods and means around this, as is real of most borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship casino, highlights 150 slot machine games and sixty gaming tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The initial casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are 150 one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort features 300 one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and 66 of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, again a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international vacation and hotel compound that contains numerous amenities on top of the gambling hall, which contains 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machines and 88 tables.
