There is an interesting background to the Cambodia gambling dens that reside just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, where gambling den gaming is illegal. Eight casinos are based in a relatively tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime spot, a 3 to four hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest wagering centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, financial sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and though visas are apparently required to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of most borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored bateau casino, features one hundred and fifty slots and sixty gaming tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 punto banco (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the familiar gaming tables, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational vacation and hotel compound that contains a number of conveniences on top of the gambling den, which houses 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machine games and 88 table games.
